After nearly 100 years of work on the plot, we think magic might have finally found the perfect Triumph.
It’s this simple:
A card is freely selected and shuffled back into the deck. The magician shuffles the cards face up into face down, and hands them to the spectator to examine and verify that the deck is truly mixed in this way.
The magician spreads the cards on the table (and they are once again SEEN to be mixed) and then slowly squares the deck. With a single whistle, the magician announces that it’s done—and spreads the cards again to show that every single card is now face up except one. The one face down card is the chosen card.
There are no hidden methods and suspicious moments. What you read above is exactly how this effect looks. (If you haven’t already watched the trailer, check that out above and you’ll see!)
The great Spanish magician Arturo de Ascanio once defined magic as ‘the difference between the initial and final condition.’
Well, the clearer and stronger the contrast between these conditions, the stronger the effect.
In many Triumph routines, after the deck is supposedly shuffled face up into face down, the magician continues handling the deck for a while before displaying—often displaying the deck is a strange series of cuts that look and feel very unnatural. No matter how convincing the initial shuffle and mix, this invariably muddies the waters and weakens the contrast with the final state.
In Joel’s Triumph, you literally see and spread through the shuffled deck YOURSELF, watch the magician spread the cards on the table and square them…and then watch as the deck is spread perfectly face-up with a single face down card—the chosen card.
There’s no ‘moment’.
The initial mixed state of the deck is seen literally perhaps two seconds before the final condition. There’s nowhere your mind can go to find a method.
And the best part is—it’s honestly really easy to perform. Joel has come up with a really innovative system that makes this effect almost self-working.
Although this is a physical gimmick, the deck can be examined by the spectator before, during, and after the effect without noticing anything amiss in the deck. As far as we know, nobody has done this before, but once you see it—you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it first.
When we saw this Triumph first at Blackpool Magic Convention, we had absolutely no idea what we’d just witnessed. For a moment, we almost believed it was real magic.
We immediately knew Joel had created an absolute winner, and that more magicians deserved to see this.
We asked Joel how many he could make before August, and if we could be the ones to release it to the magic community.
