If you want to skip the list and hear our number 1 pick, click here.
Number 10 Pick: Criss Angel Magic Set
Difficulty: 10 years +
WOW Factor: 7.8
Availability: 9
Quality: 7
Overall: 7.5
Criss Angel is (in)famous among magicians for his camera tricks and questionable magic, but there’s no denying that he puts together some pretty sweet magic sets for kids.
This product comes loaded with enough props to perform over 250 tricks! That’s enough to keep you busy for a while. This kit also comes with an instructional videos from Criss himself to help you out if you get stuck at any point, which is a great idea.
The general consensus among other reviewers is that this is a solid choice of magic kit, even though some have had slight issues with props occasionally breaking. But all in all, it’s not a bad product to start our list with!
Number 9 Pick: Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magic Set
Difficulty: 7 years +
WOW Factor: 7
Availability: 8
Quality: 8
Overall: 7.7
This magic box might not look quite as flashy and cool on the outside, but after taking a closer look you’ll begin to notice that the props are a higher quality and less cheap looking than others on the market.
This magic set might only have 10 possible tricks but they’re all really unique and well-made, so this kit feels more personal and loved than many of the alternatives (but then again, the payoff is fewer tricks- 10 compared with 500 for example).
It’s up to you, but with almost a 1000 positive reviews I think there’s no arguing that this is still a safe bet; you’re getting a truly tried, tested and loved product. At just under $30, the price is about the average for magic kits and although for that cost you might be able to find magic sets with more tricks, you’re guaranteed quality props with this one.
It’s really up to your personal preferences!
I think if I were the one choosing I would go for a set with more tricks, just because there’s more chance of you finding a really great trick that you love within them, and it’s less of an issue if one or two of your tricks don’t work.
Number 8 Pick: National Geographic Magic Kit
Difficulty: 7 years +
WOW Factor: 8
Quality: 8
Availability: 9
Overall: 8.3
National Geographic is a huge brand and it’s cool to see their contribution to the line-up of magic kits for sale.
This set contains 75 tricks, each with step-by-step video instructions. It also comes with two decks of cards that will enable them to perform many more tricks!
According to the product description, the set includes a lot of famous magic tricks “including illusions that use cups and balls, a false thumb tip, the ball and vase, an illusion box, a mysterious coin case, and a magic wand.”
I like how the product mentions that kids will be able to learn both beginner and more advanced variations on the tricks if they would like to. This should mean the kit provides the opportunity for kids to improve their skills over time!
Number 7 Pick: Marvin’s Treasured Magic Tricks Wooden Set
Difficulty: 6 years +
WOW Factor: 9
Availability: 8
Quality: 9
Overall: 8.6
Marvin’s Treasured Magic Tricks is a wonderfully well-designed, organised set for any young budding magician.
First things first, I just want to say I’m over the moon that we’ve finally found a magic set with Zero Plastic, and although we haven’t actually product tested it yet, we’ve spend the past day researching all about it and are so pleased and excited about the results.
It’s on our Christmas list…
Why?
First, I’ve got a bias for things that look awesome…
Second, within the magic set you will discover a great range of magic including the Incredible escaping coloured block, the vanishing rabbit illusion, the amazing rising card and many many more quality magic tricks and illusions!
Highlights:
- Gorgeous wooden box
- Zero plastic
- Easy to follow illustrated instruction book
- Packed full of fun tricks and hours of fun
Fun Fact: Marvin’s Magic Treasured Tricks Wooden Magic Set is the ONLY wooden magic set that has been recommended and officially endorsed by the world famous Magic Circle. According to Magic Shop, this is the magic set that professional magicians give to their children!
Actually it’s funny that I mentioned Magic Shop as they’re actually selling this set themselves…with a super special bonus. You get further expert tuition. All you have to do is scan the QR code inside and open the door to a secret webpage full of videos and tricks.
How exciting!
Number 6 Pick: Jim Stott’s ‘Ultimate Money Magic Kit’
Where To Buy: Amazon
Difficulty: 7 years +
WOW Factor: 8
Availability: 8
Quality: 8
Overall: 8
This product would be higher up the list if it weren’t for the fact that it is only ‘money’ tricks you can do with it.
The tricks themselves are a good mix of fun and impressive, the magician Jim Stott is likable, and with video and booklet instructions there isn’t much to fault it for.
The only issue is that if you buy this particular magic set, you can only do your magic with anything related to money (bills, coins, etc.) which might be frustrating to people who want to learn magic with cards or other objects like sponge balls.
I would say that if you are happy with just money magic absolutely go ahead with this set, but if you would prefer a mix of magic I would recommend trying a different option from elsewhere on the list.
Number 5 Pick: Ideal Magic Spectacular Magic Suitcase
Difficulty: 10 years +
WOW Factor: 9
Availability: 7
Quality: 7
Overall: 8.2
This magic set only offers 100 different possible magic tricks, so why on earth is it so high up on this list? Sure, it has instructions and videos included, but so do most of the other magic kits for kids.
What really sets this one apart is how it solves a very common issue…
This magic kit solves the problem of both where to store your magic props and where to perform them in one through the great double feature of acting as both a suitcase AND performance table. For that reason, and the quality of the tricks included, it gets my vote.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I love the idea of turning up with your magic suitcase and flipping it around to create a mini table to perform magic on out of nowhere.
Maybe it shouldn’t be at the No.5 spot, but with a sweet double action case like that, how could it be anywhere else?
Number 4 Pick: Ideal My First Magic Set
Difficulty: 4+
WOW Factor: 8
Availability: 7
Quality: 9
Overall: 8. 4
This is perhaps the cheapest of all the magic kits for kids on this list at only $10 but that doesn’t stop it boasting an impressive 31 props and 25 tricks, all catered to very young magicians.
This kit is for the absolute beginners and young children, and that’s reflected by the tricks (crayon magic, candy magic), but it does its job very well indeed.
Some of the tricks may be a little difficult for young children initially, but most of them can be done at as young as 4.
Watch out for fragile props; there is a chance kids could end up breaking some of the more weaker pieces in their attempts to become magicians, but that is the only downside to this set that I could think of.
Whilst there are loads of kits for slightly older children out there, this is one of the only magic sets on the market that cater for the very young audiences, and it does so really well with some incredibly simple yet visually stunning magic!
Number 3 Pick: The Penn & Teller Fool Everyone Magic Kit
Difficulty: 8+
WOW Factor: 10 (it’s Penn and Teller people, come on)
Availability: 7
Quality: 8
Overall: 8.5
Everyone already loved Penn and Teller, but now the national icons have outdone themselves with their official magic set.
With over 200 possible magic tricks, and an accompanying instructional DVD the sheer amount of fun made possible by this set outweighs the cheapish look of some of the props.
But then again, I might be biased when I say they look cheap; I think for kids these kind of tricks will be absolutely ideal.
The only downsides I could spot to this kit was that some props may be a little fragile for enthusiastic young magicians, so make sure to take care with handling the props (but with over 200 tricks possible, I’m sure breaking 1 won’t ruin things too much!).
Sure, maybe this set doesn’t have as quite as much in it as some of the other magic kits for kids, but at $30 it is also a lot lower priced than others on this list. Another reason it hasn’t placed any higher on this list is that there were only 4 kits remaining on Amazon when I last checked
Hopefully the stock should go up soon, because this set really is a gem and you should grab it while you have the chance!
Number 2 Pick: Jim Stott’s ‘Ultimate Magic Kit’
Where To Buy: Amazon
Difficulty: 10 years +
WOW Factor: 9
Availability: 7
Quality: 9
Overall: 8.6
I love the look of this set. Everything about it, from the image to the product description just shouts ‘fun’ in capital letters.
The magician responsible for this set, Jim Stott seems like a super nice guy to learn your magic from. What’s more, he personally develops each kit himself so you are guaranteed a great quality to your tricks.
The tricks involved are all neat ways to impress your friends, from levitating cards to sponge ball mayhem and Svengali decks, there really is something for everyone.
The kit comes with an instructional booklet that teaches 350 tricks; and as well as reading the instructions a link to a web page is also included so you can go ahead and watch the video tutorials for the same tricks.
For the price I think that this kit is an absolute steal; a lot of the tricks you’ll be learning aren’t just ‘kids tricks’ like in other magic sets but real tricks used by professional magicians!
Put the practice in and these trick won’t just help you entertain people, you’ll blow them away! Unsurprisingly, 81% of reviewers gave it 5 stars on Amazon too.
NOTE: As of November 2023, this kit doesn’t seem to be available to purchase. However, you can buy Jim Stott’s ‘My First Magic Kit’ and it also looks like a solid option!
So, without further ado, my first choice for magic kits for kids is…
… Number 1 Pick: Ellusionist ‘How To Be A Magician’ Kit
Where To Buy: Ellusionist
Difficulty: 10 years +
WOW Factor: 9
Availability: 8
Quality: 10
Overall: 9
What makes this kit number one?
Now, this magic kit is both a bit more expensive and harder to learn than the others. We’d recommend this for kids aged 10 and up, but not below that.
But that aside, we think it is without a doubt the BEST magic kit on this list.
Why?
This kit won’t just give you tricks—it will teach you how to become a magician.
This kit will show you how to perform the kind of magic you see on TV—even as a beginner.
It’s made by Ellusionist, a company that was built by magicians to produce and sell only the highest quality magic tricks and effects.
That’s important, because most other magic kits are made by toy companies (NOT magic companies) and the quality of the tricks and props is a lot lower. Lots of the magic in cheaper kits is fun but not incredibly durable.
The magic contained in the Ellusionist magic kit is a LOT higher quality than the others. The props and materials are built to last—in fact, they’re made so well that even pro magicians would use them.
In this kit, you’ll learn how to…
- Bite a coin in HALF, then blow it back together
- Make ink disappear and move around
- Pull a silk from a “hole” in the middle of your hand
- Vanish a cigarette – visibly
- Make objects move without touching them
- Teleport items into someone’s hand
- + 41 OTHER INCREDIBLE TRICKS
The material is taught by real, professional magicians. Ellusionit have hand-picked some of the greatest and easiest magic on earth to give even the newest beginner the appearance of years of practice and polish.
This product has over 130 reviews, and averages a 5 star rating on the Ellusionist site.
Here are some reviews that other buyers gave it:
“Very impressed…most magic kits are pretty…non impressive. This one has very cool effects, decent props, and the teaching is great. This is a professional kit, you’ll learn pro level tricks and even if you’ve been doing magic for some time, you’ll get something out of this for sure. I like this a lot. Everything I’ve bought from this site has been top notch so far. I’d recommend this for sure to anyone wanting to either get into magic OR someone who is already in the biz and wants maybe a new angle on some classics or even pick up some new tricks and skills. Buy it.”
“My 10 year old is performing at his school. Beautiful box of tricks! The quality and easy instructions will get you performing magic in minutes. For all ages As I am also leaning new tricks! Love it so much I bought another one!”
“Always wanted to try out magic for my kids – set looked like a good one. Definitely did not disappoint! Great instructions, easy to learn. Fantastic set – best part was smile on my kids’ faces!”
“This is so awesome. So many great tutorials. Tricks I have seen professional magicians posting on youtube and instagram. Practice, practice practice and plenty of instruction to boot. This is amazing, I believe it will take my magic to another level.”
This kit also has a 90-day money back guarantee. Ellusionist say ““If How to Be a Magician doesn’t do everything we say it will, send back the kit within 90 days and Ellusionist will refund every cent of your hard earned money (minus shipping).”
Now, we should note that the magic in this set is harder than the other kits and will require more concentration and commitment to learn—which is why we recommend it for ages 10 and up.
But the extra work you’ll put in is 100% worth it because this kit is full of incredibly powerful magic.
We’d highly recommend checking this one out.
NOTE: according to Ellusionist’s site, you can currently get 30% off the price of this kit using the code ‘STARTMAGIC’.
