I’ve reviewed A LOT of magic sets.
Most of them (all of them, in fact) have had some great aspects and some not-so-great parts. It’s been hard to decide a personal favorite.
But I think this one takes the cake.
Why?
It doesn’t have famous magicians like Penn and Teller or Criss Angel decorating the front of the box. It doesn’t win on quantity of magic.
But what it does cater for, is progression.
What do I mean by progression?
Imagine this. You buy a magic set for your child. They have a bunch of fun with it for the first couple years. Then, they start growing out of it. Suddenly all the tricks seem too easy, too simple. What now?
Usually, nothing. The child just stops playing with the set.
The reason I like this set in particular is because it presents a solution to this problem. Included with this magic kit is a set of 3 ebooks. Modern Coin Magic, Expert at the Card Table, and Encyclopedia of Card Magic.
Now, all these ebooks are fairly old magic books, and will definitely NOT be a good purchase for children under 12. However, once your child has outgrown the magic kit, these books are a great way of setting them off onto the next stage; real magic. So this kit might not have as many tricks as others, but what it does have is longevity.
But enough talk. Let’s get into the review. Today I’ll be going over…
What is the MasterMagic Magic Kit?
This magic kit teaches over 350 different magic tricks using easy to use props. It also provides you with three ebooks and secret access to a website full of even more magic.
This magic set is pretty popular on Amazon at the moment, with around 40 reviews averaging a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The kit claims to be ideal for children between 5 and 14, although I would probably recommend a little older than 5. If you are shopping for a 5-year old, I would advise you to try out the ‘Ideal My First Magic Set’ instead.
Where Can You Buy It?
This set appears to be available primarily from Amazon, which is no problem. Amazon is usually where I recommend buying the kit from anyway!
Something I would also advise you to keep in mind is that since kits like these tend to be so popular during the holiday season, it’s best to buy it way in advance to avoid it going out of stock later down the line!
What’s Included?
The product description boasts that you’ll be able to learn ‘350’ different magic tricks with this set. This DOESN’T mean you actually get 350 physical products. Instead, you get a few physical props but an instructional booklet that teaches you loads of different tricks you can do with the effects provided.
Here are a few of the actual magic props provided with this kit.
- Appearing Flower
The idea of making a flower appear out of nowhere is a classic trademark of a magician, and now you can do it too. The magician takes an ordinary plant pot and suddenly makes a full flower appear out of nowhere!
- Magic Coloring Book
This is probably my favorite part of this magic kit. The magic coloring book is a trick that I personally love, and I was surprised that they included it in this set for no extra cost.
Why?
Well, the Magic Coloring Book is usually sold as a standalone trick for around $10. It’s great that they’ve decided to include it in this set without charging extra.
Imagine this:
The magician shows you an ordinary looking coloring book. He flicks through the pages; all the pages have black and white drawings on them. They haven’t been colored in yet.
Now, the magician takes his wand and waves it over the book. He slowly lifts the coloring book back up and riffles through it once more. Incredibly, all the pages are now bursting with color! Every single drawing has been colored in.
But that’s not the end of it. The magician once again closes up the book and says the magic words. This time as he opens the book, to the astonishment of his audience, the pages are completely blank! Not a single ounce of color, and no drawings either! Incredible, right?
This trick is actually very simple to do but plays huge; in fact, here’s a video of Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch performing this exact trick on the Graham Norton Show! If it’s good enough for Doctor Strange and Newt Scamamder, it’s probably good enough for us too!
Note: the magic coloring book used in the video isn’t the exact same model as provided by the kit but the trick is very similar visually.
- Color Changing Silks
Silks are great magic props because they’re highly visual, colorful, and fun to use. This trick is pretty self-explanatory; an ordinary colored silk magically transforms its color from red to green…
- The Spikes Through Coin Trick
I remember using this one all the time as a kid myself. It’s easy to grasp the mechanics of how it works, yet it will undoubtedly confuse people watching it.
You place a coin inside a tube, and cover the tube up with a lid. The lid has a bunch of holes in it; so does the bottom of the tube. You take a few plastic spikes and push them through the holes in the lid. Now, at this point you’d expect the coin to be stopping the spikes from going any further.
But, to the astonishment of your audience, the spikes emerge out of the holes in the bottom of the tube, as if the coin wasn’t even there!
Once you’ve pushed all the spikes through and let the audience inspect them, you pull them out one by one. Once the spikes are out, you open up the tube and take out the coin. The coin is completely solid.
- Magic Ball and Vase
This magic trick has been in almost all of the magic kits I’ve reviewed so far. I think that’s a testament to how much people love it!
The magician shows you an ordinary vase and ball like this.
He removes the ball and places it in his pocket, and puts the lid back on the vase. He waves his magic wand once and then opens up the vase again. The ball has magically returned!
But that’s not the end of the trick. The magician places the lid of the vase back on and once again waves the magic wand over it. This time when the magician lifts up the lid, the ball has disappeared! The magician reaches into his pocket to reveal that the ball was in fact there all along.
The only issue with this trick is that it’s so popular there’s a decent chance children will have seen it done before. But if not, it’s a great little effect.
- ZigZag Pencil
This illusion is a small scale version of one that professional magicians use all the time in stage magic.
You place a pencil into a box that has three sections. You then take the middle section and slide it out like this:
As you can see, the pencil has been broken up. Or has it?
The sections are reversed back to normal and the pencil is fine!

This kit provides you with exclusive access to a website that is full of even more magic tutorials. A lot of these magic tutorials you find on the website are completely new effects that don’t even require the props from this magic set.
I briefly mentioned this earlier. When you buy this set you also get access to THREE bonus ebooks. These ebooks are way more advanced than the magic included in the set; so I would recommend mastering the tricks included before you give these ebooks a go.
Expert at the Card Table is one of these ebooks. It’s often regarded as a ‘Bible’ of card magicians; it includes almost every sleight you need to know to perform truly amazing card magic. However, since the book itself is pretty old, your child will definitely struggle to understand it unless you help them out. That’s why I would advise you to shelf it and wait until your child’s’d magic skill has advanced enough to give it a go.
- Modern Coin Magic
Coin tricks are really fun, but I don’t see a whole lot of them being taught in children’s magic sets. I’m glad that this set has decided to include this book!
If Expert at the Card Table is the Bible of card magic, Modern Coin Magic is the Bible for coin magicians. It includes over 100 sleights using coins and over 200 tricks you can do with them!
I find this book to be easier to read and understand than the card magic books, but you should be aware that it’s still not easy reading! Again, a good book to hold onto for when your child is a little older.
- Encyclopedia of Card Tricks
Expert at the Card Table is known for teaching loads of different sleights. The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks focuses on teaching actual tricks first and foremost! I believe over 600 card tricks are included!
Conclusion
The MasterMagic Magic Kit is a unique one; it provides an unusual combination of easy to do magic for kids with some seriously advanced magic books. Some people might find that off putting; I think it’s a good thing.
Rather than growing out of this magic set and abandoning it after a couple of years, you can help your child progress and learn more and more impressive magic over time.
